How much network bandwidth do your IP cameras actually need?

Most CCTV network failures aren’t hardware failures — they’re bandwidth planning failures. A 100-camera deployment with 4K cameras at H.265/15fps already consumes 500+ Mbps on the recording network alone, before live viewing, sub streams, or management traffic are accounted for.

This calculator separates the three distinct traffic flows in any IP camera system: recording bandwidth (camera to NVR), live-view bandwidth (NVR to operator clients), and WAN bandwidth (NVR to remote viewers). Each has different QoS requirements and must be sized independently.

Add multiple camera groups with different resolutions and codecs — useful for real deployments where lobby cameras may use 4K while perimeter cameras use 2MP H.265+. The tool also outputs PoE budget per group, NIC recommendations, and a VLAN design guide.

⚠️ Always verify with network monitoring tools after deployment. Real-world traffic may exceed estimates during peak activity.

Key concepts explained
Main vs Sub
Two streams per camera
Main stream records at full quality. Sub stream (10–25% bitrate) serves live grid views. NVRs switch automatically on full-screen open.
VLAN
Always isolate cameras
Camera traffic saturates shared segments and is a security risk. A dedicated VLAN enables QoS, ACLs, and limits blast radius if a camera is compromised.
4K Reality
8–12 Mbps per camera
100× 4K cameras at H.265/15fps = 500+ Mbps on the recording network. Large 4K deployments require 10 Gbps uplinks between switches.
NIC Limit
~750 Mbps usable per NIC
Use 75% of NIC throughput as practical limit. At 2 Mbps/camera (1080p H.265/25fps), one 1G NIC handles ~375 cameras before teaming is needed.

Common questions

▶ What is the difference between main stream and sub stream?

The main stream is the full-resolution stream recorded to the NVR. The sub stream is a lower-resolution stream (typically CIF, D1, or 720p) used for live grid views, consuming only 10–25% of main stream bandwidth. NVRs automatically switch to the main stream when a camera is opened full-screen.

▶ Should cameras always be on a separate VLAN?

Always. Camera traffic on shared networks degrades office applications, IP cameras are frequent attack targets, and VLAN isolation limits blast radius. The NVR server should have one NIC on the camera VLAN and a separate NIC on the management/storage network.

▶ How much bandwidth does a 4K IP camera use?

A 4K (8MP) camera at 25fps uses 8–12 Mbps in H.265 and 16–20 Mbps in H.264. With H.265+ in a static scene this drops to 3–6 Mbps. At 15fps figures are roughly 50–60% lower. For large 4K deployments, 10 Gbps uplinks between access and distribution switches are essential.

▶ What PoE standard do I need for my cameras?

Standard cameras (1080p–4MP fixed) need PoE 802.3af (15.4W). PTZ and high-res IR cameras need PoE+ 802.3at (30W). High-power PTZ, panoramic and thermal cameras need PoE++ 802.3bt (60W). Always check the camera datasheet for maximum draw, not nominal figures.

▶ How many cameras can one gigabit NIC handle?

Use 75% of NIC throughput as the practical limit (~750 Mbps). At 2 Mbps/camera (1080p H.265/25fps) that’s ~375 cameras. At 5 Mbps/camera (4K H.265/15fps) that’s ~150 cameras. Dahua recommends dual NIC teaming for DSS Pro Storage Servers handling 200+ cameras.
